What To Look for in the Quality Dog Leashes?
Besides the cute colors and cool patterns, there are a few essential items you should look for in a dog leash. Firstly, the material plays a crucial role. Opt for strong and durable options such as nylon, leather, or reinforced rope to withstand the wear and tear of daily walks. Also, the length should match your needs. A standard 6-foot leash offers versatility.
We recommend ensuring the hardware on the leash is robust and rust-resistant to keep it secure. Reflective elements are also helpful to enhance visibility during nighttime strolls. Be sure to get a leash with ergonomic handles to prevent hand strain on longer walks. Also, leashes should be strong enough to match your dog’s size and activities.
Finally, consider the intended use, whether it’s regular walks, training, or outdoor adventures. You want to select a leash that aligns with your dog’s needs and your preferences. A quality leash ensures safety and makes your walks enjoyable and stress-free.

3. Max and Neo Rope Leashes
We’re big fans of Max and Neo Rope Leashes and use them with our dogs, Luna and Solar. The simple yet stylish rope leashes are six feet long and a half-inch in diameter. They have reflective double stitching integrated into nylon rope, and HOT DOG is it reflective! Genuine leather is wrapped around the connection points. All of the metal components are matte black finish, making it a very sleek leash. These rope leashes are perfect for strong pullers (ahem…Solar when he sees a squirrel).
In addition, Max and Neo are helping rescues and raising awareness for animal welfare by donating products to shelters.

4. Cycle Dog Ecoweave Leash
Cycle Dog’s Ecoweave Leash has webbing produced from recycled plastic bottoms and they use bar tack stitching. 6. Best Retractable Leash: Flexi Neon Retractable Dog Leash (Cord), 16 ft
Our hands-down favorite retractable leash is bright, flashy, and functional. The Flexi Neon leash is reflective yellow with the best action on the button and locking mechanism we’ve found. And believe us when we say we’ve been through them! We use the Small size because it fits our hands best, and despite its 26-lb rating, we use it on our 40-lb and 32-lb mixed breeds. Granted, they are very good on leash, but they will still give a good yank anytime they spot a squirrel!
We’d recommend any of the Flexi brand retractables for their ergonomics and locking mechanism. We bought our latest model in Jan 2022 to replace our old Flexi retractable that was at least 10 years old.
- Reflective 16 ft cord leash that helps increase safety for dogs…
- Reflective stickers and neon-colored components for better…
- Convenient handling thanks to single-handed use of the brake…

What Are the Types of Dog Leashes?
As we’ve gone through our list, you’ve likely noticed that not all leashes are the same. What’s the difference? When do you need one over the other?
The best and most unique dog leashes come in various styles, each tailored to meet specific needs and preferences. Here are the general different types to help you make an informed choice for your furry friend.
Standard Leash
A classic among dog owners, the standard leash is typically around four to six feet in length, providing just enough control while allowing your pup some freedom to roam. They come in various materials like nylon or cotton and are great for everyday walks. They are flat, woven webbing leashes that can have different patterns and images on them. They are sturdy and strong, with a loop handle at one end and a clasp at the other. The handle will sometimes have additional padding for your wrist.
Retractable Leash
Good for pet parents who want to grant their dogs more freedom to explore. These leashes have a retractable cord or tape, allowing you to adjust the length up to 12 to 20 feet. Keep in mind that these are best for well-trained dogs, as they don’t necessarily offer as much control as other options. Expect to get wrapped up and tangled at least occasionally, lol.
We personally prefer the cord leashes to the tape, as in our experience the cords have a longer retracting lifespan than the tapes, possibly due to dirt, water, and grime as it retracts. We also like the kind that leaves a foot or two of the leash out in the fully-retracted position, as this works well as an emergency slip-lead for many dogs in case a collar breaks or you come across a stray.
Finally, retractable leashes all have different locking mechanisms that stop the retraction. Sometimes these are difficult to activate, sometimes they are hard to release, and sometimes both. Finding one that comes naturally so you can quickly latch it or unlatch it is helpful when coming across other dogs, people, or obstacles your dog wants to get tangled on.

Rope Leashes
Known for their durability, rope leashes are often made from sturdy materials like climbing rope or braided nylon. They’re ideal for strong or large dogs and are typically resistant to wear and tear. While limited on displaying images, the braids can be different colors and wrapped intentionally to create interesting patterns.
Leather Leash
If you’re looking for a leash that combines style with function, a leather leash is a fantastic choice. Classic leather leashes are not only elegant but also comfortable to hold and durable. Plus, regular maintenance can keep them looking great for years.
Paracord Leash
Paracord leashes are constructed from the same material used in parachute cords. They are incredibly strong and lightweight, making them a favorite for outdoor adventures. These leashes are also customizable and usually come in various and often vibrant colors.
Training Leash
Specifically designed for training purposes, these leashes come in various lengths depending on what you’re training. Usually, they are longer to allow your dog more movement around you as you navigate different scenarios and situations.
They offer better control and help in teaching your dog commands. They’re often made of nylon for easy handling, and can also have a slip lead end.
Slip Lead
Often used in professional training or by dog handlers, a slip lead style leash combines a collar and leash into one. This type of leash slips over your dog’s head and tightens when pulled, providing gentle correction. It’s a versatile option for both training and daily walks.
Gentle Leader
A gentle leader is a specific type of dog leash and harness system designed to aid in the training and control of dogs. It’s usually best for those who tend to pull or exhibit behavioral issues during walks. It’s not a leash on its own but a combination of a headcollar and leash.
Pro Tip: Give your pup an extra dose of style with a bow-tie dog collar!
