Do you remember Bob Barker’s stance on spay and neuter? Get ready for a blast from the past as we reminisce over “The Price Is Right” host’s famous phrase. But, most importantly, we discuss the need for spaying and neutering pets in this article.

So, come on down! Let’s get into it!

Who Is Bob Barker?

Bob Barker is a famous figure in American television and the host of the long-standing game show “The Price Is Right”. He’s renowned for his influential career as a television host and animal rights activist.

Bob was the host of “The Price Is Right” for an astonishing 35 years, from 1972 to 2007. His infectious enthusiasm, distinctive voice, and sharp wit endeared him to millions of viewers, making him an iconic television personality.

Aside from being a TV host, Bob dedicated himself to advocating for animal rights. He used his platform to educate the public about animal welfare and encourage responsible pet ownership. His widely recognized catchphrase, “Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered,” ended each episode of “The Price Is Right”.

Bob’s contributions to the entertainment industry and animal advocacy have left an indelible mark and legacy. As of the writing of this article, he’s 99 years old and living in California.

Bob Barker explains how the studio reacted to him inserting his famous phrase.

What Is Spay and Neuter?

Spay and neutering are surgical procedures performed on dogs and cats to prevent them from reproducing. Spaying refers to the surgical removal of a female animal’s ovaries and uterus, while neutering involves the removal of a male animal’s testicles. These procedures are commonly recommended by veterinarians as a means of population control, reducing the number of unwanted and stray animals.

Spaying and neutering not only prevent unplanned litter but also offer several health benefits. In female animals, it eliminates the risk of uterine infections and significantly reduces the chances of mammary tumors. Neutering male animals can help prevent testicular cancer and reduce dominant and boisterous behaviors.

In addition, spaying and neutering can contribute to a calmer demeanor, reduce roaming tendencies for outdoor pets, and lessen the urge to mark territory on things. The procedures are highly recommended for responsible pet ownership. It promotes the welfare of individual animals and addresses the larger issue of animal overpopulation, which in turn helps keep shelters from overcrowding.

Why Did Bob Barker Urge People to Spay and Neuter Their Pets?

Bob Barker started urging people to spay and neuter their pets in the early 1980s. The most public and famous way he did so was by concluding each episode of “The Price Is Right” with the phrase, “Help control the pet population, have your pet spayed or neutered.”

Years ago, Bob was invited to be the chair of Be Kind to Animals Week in Los Angeles, California. Because of this he became more aware of the exploitation of animals and felt passionate about helping. He then began saying his now-famous phrase at the end of his show. Bob sees the only solution to end homelessness in pets is to have them spayed and neutered, so that’s what he asks people to do.

Bob was a voice for voiceless cats and dogs. He reached millions of people through television and in his advocacy work.

We can all help control the pet population by spaying and neutering our pets.

The Pet Overpopulation Problem

If you walk into any animal shelter, you’ll never hear them complain about the lack of animals. Animal shelters see lost and abandoned animals come through their doors every day. If not enough people come and adopt, what are they to do? What if every home that wants a pet has one?

Euthanasia is a wildly unpopular solution to overpopulation, but a permanent sanctuary for these unwanted pets is not an option in all areas. Even sanctuaries like Best Friends Animal Society and The Asher House have limits on how many animals they can responsibly care for at one time, from both a health and financial standpoint.

The most widely accepted and available way to reduce the unwanted pet population is to spay and neuter pets. This is why many organizations subsidize spaying and neutering in their communities and implement Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs for feral cat colonies.

What Other Ways Did Bob Barker Advocate for Animals and Their Welfare?

Bob Barker’s advocacy for animals and their welfare extended far beyond his role as the host of “The Price Is Right.” Throughout his career, he utilized his platform and personal resources to champion various causes related to animal rights. He generously donated millions of dollars to organizations such as The Humane Society, Mercy for Animals, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and more.

Bob also spearheaded numerous campaigns and initiatives, raising awareness about the cruel practices of animal exploitation, such as the fur trade, animal testing, and captive wildlife. He tirelessly lobbied lawmakers and advocated for legislative changes to improve animal welfare standards, including stricter regulations for animal circuses and the banning of exotic animal ownership.

How Does Bob Barker’s Legacy Live on for Animals’ Welfare?

Bob Barker’s dedication and unwavering commitment to animal rights have left an indelible impact. He has inspired countless people to become more conscious of the ethical treatment of animals and encourage meaningful changes in society. His work has continued throughout his retirement.

Bob’s philanthropy and support for numerous animal welfare organizations have paved the way for continued advancements in the field. The financial contributions he made to organizations have enabled them to carry out crucial campaigns and initiatives to protect animals and raise awareness about their plight.

Bob Barker's Quest To Get Your Pet Spayed or Neutered Pays Off

Does Drew Carey Still Say “Have Your Pets Spayed and Neutered” at the End of The Price Is Right?

Drew Carey, the current host of “The Price Is Right”, has carried on Bob Barker’s legacy for animal welfare. He continues to end every episode of the game show with Bob’s famous phrase, “Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered.”

Drew Carey is a well-known comedian and television personality who took over for Bob Barker in 2007. He successfully carried on the show’s traditions while also adding his own personal touch.

Where Can You Take Your Pet to Get Spayed or Neutered?

There are several options available to get your pet spayed or neutered. The easiest option is to have it done at your local veterinarian clinic or animal hospital. They have trained professionals who can perform the procedure safely and efficiently. If you haven’t yet solidified who your veterinarian will be for your dog or cat, this is a great opportunity to make a first vet appointment and get to know them.

Another option is to seek out low-cost or subsidized spay or neuter programs. Many animal shelters, rescue organizations, and community clinics provide affordable or even free spay and neuter services for dogs and cats. These programs aim to make the procedure accessible to any pet owner, no matter their financial situation.

Search your area for low-cost or free spay and neuter clinics.

Have Your Pets Spayed and Neutered, Bob Barker Would Thank You
