Taco Tuesday is a beloved tradition for many. But if you’re thinking of letting your cat indulge in the leftovers, you might want to think twice. Sure, your kitty may long to lick your plate, but can cats taste spicy? And even if they can’t, is it bad for them?

Below we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about feline taste buds, including what they should and shouldn’t eat. Let’s dig in.

Why You Shouldn’t Celebrate Taco Tuesday with Your Cat

As tempting as it may be to share your love for tacos with your furry companion, cats and spicy food simply don’t mix. While you may enjoy the fiery kick of jalapeños or the heat of chili powder, your cat’s digestive system isn’t equipped to handle such intense flavors. In fact, feeding your cat spicy food can lead to a host of health problems and discomfort.

Cats have the receptors needed for them to taste spicy food, however, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for them.

Can Cats Taste Spicy?

Contrary to popular belief, cats can indeed taste spicy flavors. While they have a unique pallet that differs from humans and even dogs, they do have the taste receptors needed to taste and feel spicy foods. This receptor is called TRPV1, which allows them to detect capsaicin, the compound responsible for making chili peppers spicy.

Certain peppers develop capsaicin as a survival mechanism to reproduce. It’s meant to irritate any animal that eats it, with the exception of birds. This is because when birds eat the peppers, they’re able to fly and spread the seeds to other locations, helping to plant more chili peppers! Our furry friends are no exception, however, which is why cats can taste spicy food.

What Happens if a Cat Eats Something Spicy?

Feeding your cat spicy food can have several adverse effects on their health. Consuming spicy foods can irritate your cat’s digestive tract, leading to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Additionally, spicy foods can cause inflammation in the mouth and throat, making it uncomfortable for your cat to eat or swallow. In severe cases, spicy foods can even lead to gastritis or pancreatitis, potentially requiring veterinary intervention.

Cats Have a Unique Sense of Taste

If your cat has a taste for cupcakes, it’s likely just because of the fat content. In fact, cats cannot taste sweetness.

Feline taste buds differ from human taste buds in a variety of ways. First of all, cats cannot taste sweetness. It’s estimated that through the evolutionary process, cats stopped being about to taste sweetness because they were strict carnivores. They also have many more bitterness receptors than humans, which can make them notorious picky eaters.

The other tastes that cats can sense include saltiness, sourness, and umami. As such, their taste preferences are geared towards foods that are high in protein and fat. While a spicy taco may be a culinary delight for you, it’s far from ideal for your cat’s nutritional needs.

What Human Foods are Healthiest for Cats?

If you’re looking to treat your cat to some human food, there are plenty of safe and healthy options to consider. However, it’s important to remember that cats are strict carnivores. Here are a few human foods that are safe and nutritious for cats.

Balanced, Tasty Homemade Cat Food Recipe

Cooked, Unseasoned Meats

Lean meats such as chicken, turkey, and beef can be a tasty and protein-rich treat for your cat. However, it’s crucial to ensure that the meat is cooked thoroughly and free from any seasonings or additives that could be harmful to your cat’s health.

Cooked, Unseasoned Eggs

Eggs are another excellent source of protein for cats and can be served hardboiled or scrambled. However, it’s essential to avoid adding any seasonings or oils to the eggs, as these can upset your cat’s stomach. Additionally, be sure to cook the eggs thoroughly to avoid the risk of salmonella contamination.

Feed Your Cat Based on Their Carnivorous Instincts

Can cats taste spicy?
Cats evolved to be strict carnivores and should therefore eat a diet high in animal protein.

As obligate carnivores, cats thrive on a diet high in animal protein and low in carbohydrates. When choosing human foods to share with your cat, it’s essential to keep their carnivorous instincts in mind. Avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates, such as bread, rice, and pasta, as these can lead to obesity and other health issues in cats.

While the temptation to share your love for tacos with your cat may be strong, it’s crucial to resist the urge. Spicy foods can wreak havoc on your cat’s digestive system and lead to a host of health problems. Instead, opt for safe and nutritious human foods that are compatible with your cat’s dietary needs. By feeding your cat appropriately, you can ensure that they stay happy, healthy, and purring for years to come.
