5 Best Cat Diapers + What They Are and How To Use Them

Cat diapers may seem comical, but they’re a reality for some pets. Whether your feline has health issues preventing it from using the litter box or you’re transitioning an outdoor cat to the indoors, a diaper may be a solution to prevent accidents. In this article, we discuss what cat diapers are, how to use them, and the best options on the market.

Let’s jump in!

Why Use Cat Diapers on Your Pet?

Cat diapers can be a valuable tool for certain situations or challenges. There are various reasons why using cat diapers can be beneficial for both your cat and you, the caretaker. One common scenario is when a cat is experiencing incontinence due to old age, illness, a UTI (urinary tract infection), or recovering from an injury or surgery that prevents litter box use. Diapers can help manage messes and provide comfort to the cat, allowing them to maintain their dignity (albeit a shred) while avoiding accidents.

Cat diapers can be useful to transition an outdoor cat to the indoors while it’s getting used to a litter box versus peeing and pooping anywhere. Some people also use them while traveling or when staying in unfamiliar environments. Or, if you bring home a rescue cat, it may benefit from a diaper during the transition into your household.

But should cats wear diapers and will they? It’s important to note that not all cats will tolerate wearing one. If it’s necessary for your cat, introduce it gradually and ensure it’s the right size and fit. Consulting with a veterinarian is recommended to determine if your cat should wear diapers and to address any underlying health issues that may be contributing to the need for their use.

The best option for cats is to use a litter box. Some can be trained to use an actual toilet, but that can present its own challenges. When neither of these options is working, a cat diaper is an excellent alternative.

Cat diapers are designed to stay on, but some cats may resist wearing them.

How Do Cat Diapers Work Exactly?

Cat diapers are designed to effectively contain a cat’s pee and poop. It’s similar to a human baby or adult diaper. They typically feature a soft, absorbent inner layer that wicks away moisture, preventing leaks and keeping the cat dry. The outer layer is usually waterproof, providing an additional barrier against leaks and odors. Most have adjustable fasteners, such as Velcro or adhesive tabs, to secure them snugly around the cat’s midsection. Cat diapers also have tail holes.

While cat diapers are designed to stay on, that’s not always as easy as the product may market it. Depending on your cat’s behavior and temperament, it may initially resist wearing diapers and attempt to remove them. Or if your pet is extremely active, it could tear the diaper or work the tabs loose. However, with proper introduction and training, many cats can get used to wearing diapers over time. Gradual acclimation is key, starting with short periods of wearing the diaper and rewarding the cat with treats and positive reinforcement for cooperation.

Choosing the right size and fit for your cat is key to ensuring comfort and preventing discomfort or chafing.

Washable diapers are more eco-friendly than disposables, but you do have to wash and disinfect them after each use.

How To Choose The Best Cat Diaper for You

Let’s get into the specifics of how to choose the best cat diaper for your fur baby.

Using Pet Vs. Human Diapers

Some people just modify human newborn diapers for their cats. We think that works fine as long as you measure and create the holes for maximum comfort. You can also use dog diapers if you get a small enough size, but cats are usually more flexible and better at getting out of things than dogs so be sure it’s secure. The best option is to choose one of the cat diapers we recommend coming up in this article.

Get The Correct Size

Sizing is the most important consideration as you don’t want the cat’s diaper to leak. Make sure it’s snug but not too tight. Just remember, our curious felines like to squirm out of things, so snug is best.

Disposable vs. Washable

Using a disposable or washable cat diaper is a personal preference. Disposable diapers are easy, although they’re not environmentally friendly. Washable diapers require you to wash and dry them, so it’s extra work for you. If you choose washables, we recommend sun drying them for optimum disinfecting.

5 Best Cat Diapers

There are many options for pet diapers on the market. Some are specific to dogs, but there are cat diapers. We’re sharing the top five here. One thing to keep in mind is if your cat is male or female. There are gender-specific diapers or you can modify them if you find a brand you really like.

1. Hartz Disposable Cat Diapers

2. Pet Soft Disposable Cat Diapers

They have a unisex design for both male and female cats. In addition, they come in numerous colors, patterns, and sizes. They even have a “no escape” overall for wriggly escape artists. Be prepared for a bit of sticker shock compared to the previously-mentioned diapers, as these list for over $50 apiece. However, remember these are hand-crafted and made in America. If you’re dealing with a chronic condition, you may want to invest in something that’s going to last from a company that specializes in this product.

5. Fuz Bigaza Washable Dog Diapers (3 Pack) – Small

Fuz Bigaza Washable Dog Diapers are reusable female dog diapers that you can modify on your own for a cat as needed. They come in multiple sizes and patterns and have snap buttons. Just make sure to measure your cat properly before purchasing these to order the correct size. The diapers are leak-proof and have a sewn-in super absorbent pad with bird-eye mesh fabric against the skin.

Cats of any age can adapt to wearing a diaper. Once they’re comfortable in it, they’ll realize it’s easy to play and relax in them.

How Often Should You Change a Cat Diaper?

You should change a cat’s diaper every time it pees or poops. The frequency will depend on several factors, including the cat’s age, health condition, and activity level. But changing it as soon as it becomes soiled will maintain cleanliness and prevents skin irritation.

Cats have a natural instinct to keep themselves clean, and prolonged exposure to urine or feces can lead to discomfort and potential health issues. Keeping the diaper clean helps minimize odors and maintain a hygienic environment. Check the diaper regularly and change it promptly when needed. We suggest getting some eco-friendly disposable pet wipes to help with the diaper changes.
