8 Cool Dog Beds For Chill Canines

A cool dog bed is about chilling literally and stylishly. Our pups like to lay on surfaces that give them a reprieve from the heat. Or sometimes a cooling bed just feels good in any kind of temperature. Whether your dog has a lot of fur or little, this article is for you. Keep reading to learn why dogs like cool beds and find eight of our favorite options on the market.

Let’s get into it!

Do Dogs Like Cooling Beds and Blankets?

Most dogs like cooling beds and blankets during hot weather or if they have thick coats. Canines regulate their body temperature by panting and seeking out cooler surfaces to lie on. Beds or blankets that offer some chill are specifically designed to provide relief by dissipating body heat. Dogs tend to gravitate towards these cooling accessories as a way to stay comfortable during warmer days or even in the winter if your furnace keeps the house too warm for their liking. However, not all dogs are the same and some may prefer their warm, cozy bed even when it’s scorching hot outside.

To put it in perspective, if you were sweating hot and had the choice of laying on a down comforter or a cool towel, which would you choose? You’d likely pick the towel.

It can sometimes be harder for dogs to get cool since they do not sweat as humans do.

Do Cooling Dog Beds Work for Dogs?

Cool dog beds do work for dogs. They often contain materials that retain coolness, such as gel-infused memory foam or breathable fabrics. Some cooling beds have water-filled chambers that maintain a refreshing temperature.

Cooling dog beds can be effective in providing comfort and relief to dogs during hot weather or if they tend to overheat easily. The heat from their body transfers away when laying on the bed, promoting a more comfortable and relaxing experience. If your dog has osteoarthritis, be sure to get a bed that’s conducive to your pup’s specific needs.

Are Elevated Beds Cooler for Dogs?

Elevated beds can offer a cooler sleeping option for dogs, especially in warmer weather, but it depends on what it’s made of. Most elevated or cot-style beds have mesh or breathable fabric, allowing air to circulate underneath them. These help to dissipate body heat and keep the dog cooler compared to traditional beds that trap heat against the surface.

Elevated beds also prevent direct contact with hot surfaces like floors or the ground and further reduce the risk of overheating. They’re an excellent option for camping and outdoor activities since they also keep your pup out of the dirt.

Tips for Keeping Your Dog Cool in the Heat

Keeping your dog cool in the heat is vital. First, never leave your pets in vehicles. They heat up like an oven within minutes, even with the windows open.

Other tips for keeping your pup cool include keeping walks and playtime short and staying away from hot asphalt. A fun option for a cool playtime activity is swimming, but if your dog goes in the ocean make sure to know the risks of salt water poisoning. Keep your pup from ingesting salt water, as it makes canines sick.

Most importantly, give your dog plenty of fresh water throughout the day. Keeping your pet hydrated is absolutely crucial all the time and especially in hot weather. Also, try to stay in the shade when you’re outside and be in places with plenty of airflow.

Be vigilant for signs of heatstroke, such as heavy panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness, or collapsing. If you suspect heatstroke, seek immediate veterinary care.

Pro Tip: Try using dog goggles to keep your pup’s eyes safe from UV rays while outside.
