We’ll be quick to admit to being space nerds! From NASA to SpaceX, we love watching the launches and following all the latest discoveries. In fact, we’re such space nerds that we named our dogs Luna and Solar after the moon and the sun. But space isn’t all about science and nerding out – it’s also about looking smart and out-of-this-world. A NASA dog costume, collar, bandana, or other accessory is the perfect way to show off your pup’s space jams. In this article, we delve into the world of space-inspired pet gear to get your dog channeling their inner “bark-stronaut.” From astronaut-themed collars to stylish hoodies, we’ve scoured the galaxy for the best NASA dog accessories.
Who Was the Space Dog?
First, we can’t talk about outerspace and dogs without talking about Laika. Laika, often referred to as the “Space Dog,” is a bittersweet figure in the history of space exploration. She was a Moscow stray who was launched into space aboard Sputnik 2 by the USSR, and was not intended to survive nor be retrieved. Laika was a brave and unwitting pioneer, becoming the first living creature from Earth to journey into the depths of space. Her mission aboard Sputnik 2 in 1957 marked a significant milestone in space history, demonstrating our capability to venture beyond our planet’s atmosphere.
We pay our respects to Laika’s courage and nod our heads in recognition of the inhumane practices of the past. Laika’s mission was a product of a different era and region, with grossly inadequate consideration for animal welfare. Today, we honor her legacy and remember the lessons learned from her journey. Laika’s story reminds us of the progress we’ve made in the treatment of animals. It also inspires us to continue reaching for the stars in more humane ways.
NASA + Dogs = Viral Cute Vibes
Two of the most famous NASA-centered viral images with dogs are from an astronaut and a photographer.
Leland Marvin’s NASA family photos with his pups captured a heartwarming blend of space exploration and the companionship of a person’s best friend. Marvin, an astronaut, brought his beloved dogs with him for his famous photo shoot in an orange space suit. The resulting photos offer a touching glimpse into the unique bond between humans and their pets even in the most extraordinary circumstances.
In contrast, William Wegman’s art with Weimaraners in space suits takes a whimsical and artistic approach to space-themed imagery. Wegman, a renowned photographer and artist, is known for incorporating Weimaraner dogs into his work. The juxtaposition of these elegant canines in astronaut gear adds a touch of humor and surrealism to space-related concepts. He created a delightful blend of the mundane and the extraordinary.
